Consistency
Why is it so important to have consistency? Consistency is a measurement that can be used to gauge success. Many years after the resurrection of Jesus, the early Church soon realized that many different people were spreading many different messages about the Christ. There were groups of people called the Gnostics who believed that there were secrets to get to heaven not revealed by Jesus. The Church realized that it was important to have consistency in matters of belief. It is important to remember that the message of Jesus is a very singular message and does not contain any secrets.
The Church elders convened the council of Nicea in 325 AD to gather believers from all corners for the world to create a definitive document of what we believe. So the next time you are at Mass and saying the Nicean Creed remember that the Nicean Creed is a statement of what we believe.
